Battle for Dream Island: The Power of Two (BFDI:TPOT) or simply The Power of Two (TPOT), is the 5th season[2] of the Battle for Dream Island series, with its first 2 episodes directed by Satomi Hinatsu and Pokey and later episodes directed by Sam Thornbury, Cary Huang and Michael Huang.

The season is hosted by Two and was announced in "The Escape from Four". The Power of Two consists of 40 contestants from the original Battle for BFDI, plus two recommended characters (Winner and Price Tag), two EXITors (Pencil and Liy) and Teardrop. The other 14 contestants that didn't switch continue to battle in Battle for BFB. The prize is Two's power.

The first episode, "You Know Those Buttons Don't Do Anything, Right?", was announced to release on January 9, 2021, according to the stinger in "Uprooting Everything". However, it was delayed a few hours due to glitches of the intro[3] and ended up being released on January 10, 2021.

The intro was made by Elias A. "coal bones", RickToons, and Amor Boretto,[4] and the song played in the TPOT intro is called "Gibberish!!".

If each episode continues the trend of having 2 characters eliminated each, there will be at least 20 episodes. Cary has stated that it is likely that TPOT will have less than 32 episodes upon completion.[5]

Overview[]

The official intro to the season.

This season was created following the split of Battle For BFDI, one being the 2nd half of the original season: Battle for BFB and the other being Battle for Dream Island: The Power of Two. The 42 contestants were split into 6 teams of 7. At the end of the episode, the viewers can vote one member of each team who to save in the comments section, and have a window of 48 hours after every episodes are released. Teardrop joined the season and competed on her own team in "The Worst Day of Black Hole's Life". Pencil and Liy joined the season and are competing on CloudYAY and Bagged respectively as of "Category One".

Unlike post-split BFB, TPOT features a format similar to the pre-split BFB episodes.[6] The episodes produced for this season have a higher quality in both animation and writing compared to the previous seasons; consequently, they release less frequently, unlike BFB, which tends to have its episodes 3–4 weeks apart.

According to a May 2022 community post on YouTube, Satomi said she and the TPOT crew might work on the shorter and faster episodes starting with TPOT 3 and onwards after TPOT 2. Any new episodes of TPOT would come out a bit more regularly, starting with "Gardening Zero" after TPOT 3.

Satomi and Pokey would write the first two episodes of TPOT before being laid off from Jacknjellify in July 2022; subsequent episodes of TPOT would be written by Sam Thornbury, with the exception of "Gardening Zero" which was written by Cary Huang. "Out Of The Blue" and "What's Up Bell's String?" were written by Thornbury, but they were also co-written by Michael Huang, Niall Burns and "YellowAngiru".

TPOT is running concurrently with the revival of Battle for Dream Island Again, since the release of "Well Rested" on September 1, 2023.[7]

Trivia[]

Tpotlogo

Logo shown on the end of "The Escape from Four"

  • The Power of Two was originally not considered early on, and the contestants that weren't in the final 14 of BFB were going to be permanently killed off and eliminated from the game.[9]
  • This is the first season...
    • ...to be named directly after its prize, without "battle for" preceding it. It is also called the "Battle for the Power of Two" (or "BFTPOT") by Two in the first episode, right before the intro.
    • ...that lacks the letters B, F, D, and I in its abbreviation. (assuming you refer to it as TPOT rather than BFDI:TPOT)
    • ...that lacks a former rejoiner.
    • ...to have a single member of Pencil's Alliance compete, with Pencil being the only one competing in the season (not including Book and Ice Cube due to being alternates, or Needle due to her no longer being associated with Freesmart).
    • ...to have the first eliminated contestant not be voiced by Michael Huang as he does not voice Pie.
    • ...to have its debut at the beginning instead of the merge.
    • ...to have 2 back-to-back debuts, as Winner and Price Tag join in the 1st episode and Teardrop joins in the 2nd episode.
    • ...to have a Cake at Stake in its first episode.
    • ...where Bubble isn't the first character to be recovered.
    • ...to have double eliminations used as a form of voting.
    • ...to have 2 teams up for elimination at once on multiple occasions.
    • ...to have episodes split into chapters on YouTube.
    • …without Donut hosting in a season he was in.
  • This is the second season...
    • ...to have an announced release date before it started, with IDFB being the first (However, TPOT is the only season where it was known that the premiere would be a new season (as it was expected that BFDIA 6 would come out originally instead of IDFB).
    • ...to use votes to save, after Battle for BFB.
    • ...to allow another contestant to debut due to someone else being absent; Battle for Dream Island Again was the first.
    • ...to have the first words spoken by Michael (as Yellow Face, or Four in a recording) instead of Cary, with BFB being the first.
    • ...to have a newbie (a character NOT competing in or hosting BFDI) eliminated first, after Battle for Dream Island Again.
    • ...to have a team that has multiple different interpretations for it's name, with TPOT having Bagged and Battle For BFDI having Bleh.
  • This is the third season to have a female contestant be the first eliminated, after Battle for Dream Island and Battle for BFDI.
  • The acronym TPOT is commonly pronounced as "teapot". The acronym was hinted on March 19, 2020 with a picture of X holding a teapot posted on Jacknjellify's Twitter and community page.
  • 4 to the power of 2 (or 2 to the power of 4) equals 16 (), which jokingly refers to the episode number from Battle for BFDI/BFB.
  • According to Satomi Hinatsu, Kenzie Bryant came up with the name "TPOT".[10]
  • It seems it was also possible that the contestants were able to switch between Battle for BFB and this competition if they wanted to.[6] However, after BFB 17, this idea seems to be scrapped due to no future BFB episodes having any involvement with TPOT contestants. However, Teardrop joined TPOT late, making her the only contestant in both BFB (post-split) and TPOT.
  • This season has the 2nd largest cast of contestants at 45, surpassed by BFB's 64 (65, if Profiley is counted).
  • X was originally a co-host with Two in TPOT, but he was taken back to BFB in "X Marks the Spot" as a challenge.
  • As of TPOT, Pin, Coiny, Ice Cube, Rocky, Tennis Ball, Golf Ball, Pencil and Needle are the only characters who have competed in every season of BFDI (and were outside the TLC and LOL in IDFB).
    • If characters inside the TLC and LOL in IDFB are counted, Teardrop has also competed in every season of BFDI; additionally, if Battle for BFB is counted as a separate season from Battle for BFDI, then Teardrop is the only character to have competed on all six seasons
    • This is also the first season to not include Firey and Spongy, although Firey has made cameo appearances in "Balancing P.A.C.T.", "Category One" and "Seasonal Shift".
      • By default, this will be the first season (second chronologically) where Spongy isn't the highest ranking armless contestant.
  • This season has the lowest number of returning Season 1 contestants, at 11.
  • Saw, Needle, and Ice Cube are the only contestants to begin the season with design changes from BFB, as...
  • Donut made it farther than he did in BFDIA.
  • The logo for TPOT uses the "Wolpe Fanfare" font.
  • Kenzie Bryant has said that, when selecting the season's roster, the BFB team simply selected the contestants they wanted, leaving the rest for TPOT.[11]
  • According to Kenzie Bryant's CuriousCat, when questioned about a nonbinary character in TPOT, she refused to comment further due to "spoilers".[12]
  • In celebration of TPOT's release, #tpot became trending on Twitter with the caption, "A new season of the animated YouTube show Battle for Dream Island, titled the[sic] 'The Power of Two,' will be released".[13]
  • Some character poses at the ending sequence of the season's intro are references to the show's name, The Power Of Two:
    • Clock's clock hands are in the reading position of 2:00.
    • Price Tag's face reads as 'P:2', obviously meaning "Power of Two".
    • TV's screen depicts a green version of the Utah teapot, in reference to the show's acronym as pronounced. The Utah teapot is a 3D model commonly used for digital render testing, as well as an in-joke amongst the computer graphics community.
    • Winner is holding up 2 fingers.
  • The final seconds of the intro reference the intros from Battle for Dream Island, Battle For Dream Island Again, and IDFB.
    • This includes the bassline during the mentioned scene, which sounds reminiscent of the music for the intros of the first three seasons.
  • So far, this is the only season to have a character's name in it (Two).
  • Pin, Rocky, and Fries appear to be standing around a grotato plant in the intro.
  • This season's intro is the second one to feature its host(s); the first was BFB.
  • This season's intro is the second-longest intro; the first is BFB 1's with 50 seconds (if you count the intro used for the entire season, however, then TPOT's intro is the longest).
  • The intro is the first in BFDI's history to feature a death: Pie exploding after coming near a fire on Bomby's fuse.
  • Everything involving the EXITors will take place in TPOT, despite the EXIT being in Four, who is in BFB.
  • The former BFB contestants who reach the final 15 in TPOT will be the only contestants who successfully surpass their placement in BFB.
    • Pencil and Liy are the exception, as they weren't included in the 40-way tie. As of their debut in "Category One", by default, they've already placed better TPOT than in BFB.
  • After a character is eliminated, they will be no longer present in the credits in upcoming episodes.
  • So far, TPOT is seemingly the only competition season where the Announcer isn't involved in anyway, as BFDIA had him semi-hosting offscreen and BFB had him come back post-split.
  • This season has the least amount of vote difference percentages on average, with the eliminations after "The Worst Day of Black Hole's Life" usually having less than a 1% difference.
  • Pencil received the most votes to stay in one episode out of the entire BFDI series, at 71,817 votes.
  • Naily is the contestant to receive the least votes overall in the season with 2,286. However, Clock received the least votes out of anyone in a single TPOT elimination so far, at 2,152 votes.
  • Pillow currently holds the record for the most votes to stay upon being eliminated with 33,613 votes.
  • TPOT and Battle for Dream Island Again are the two seasons to gain an International main producer (writer+director) as Australian Sam Thornbury has taken both roles for TPOT since "Getting Puffball To Think About Rollercoasters".
  • This is the second season where a contestant is eliminated in the same episode number as a previous season, as Pin and Ice Cube left the show in both episode sixteen of BFB and this season.
    • The first instance was with Pen leaving in the sixteenth episodes of BFDI and BFB.
  • A Better Name Than That is the BFB team with all of it's former members that joined The Power of Two still in the game for the longest time (15 episodes), until "Seasonal Shift", with Basketball and Robot Flower's elimination.
  • Discounting "Out Of The Blue", a BFDIA contestant has been eliminated in every episode from "Balancing P.A.C.T." to "Category One,"
  • As of "Bottle For Dream Island" if no more rejoins, debuts, or non-competition episodes happen, and the double eliminations remain consistent, theoretically there would be only 8 episodes left, ending the season at TPOT 25.
  • By bracketed letter, the number of times a contestant was eliminated under each are:
  • Several episodes of this season have capitalization mistakes/quirks, punctuation errors or repeated punctuation outside of the episodes themselves (their title and thumbnail):
    • TPOT 9's title mistakenly capitalizes the word "At" in "At Stake", despite its title referencing Cake at Stake (with the word at being lowercase.)
    • TPOT 10's thumbnail text reads "WAKE UP!!", having 2 exclamation points. This makes it the first BFDI episode chronologically and in release date order to have 2 or more punctuation marks at the end of a word in its title or thumbnail. (BFB 26 isn't counted because its thumbnail uses an ellipsis, which is a punctuation mark on its own)
    • TPOT 11's title capitalizes every word in its title, including the words "of the", which should be lowercase in a standard title case format.
    • TPOT 12 uses the "wrong apostrophe" in its title (U+2019) instead of the apostrophe used in most BFDI episode names (U+0027), the last time this happened before this episode released was in BFB 4's title; despite the large gap between BFB 4 and TPOT 12's release dates, the "wrong apostrophe" was again used in BFDIA 17's title, this time not in the episode name itself, but in Clay O'Donnell's name in the ft. section.
    • TPOT 13's thumbnail text reads "STOP HER!!", which is the second time a TPOT episode has 2 exclamation points in its thumbnail text.
    • TPOT 14's title reads "I SAID CAREFUL!!!", which is the first time more than 1 punctuation mark is used successively in an episode's title in the series overall, and the first time 3 after a word are used in a title or thumbnail. 3 exclamation points are used, which beats TPOT 10 and 13's thumbnail record of 2 exclamation marks.
    • TPOT 17's title reads "Bottle For Dream Island", which isn't an accurate title if it was trying to reference the series itself, as the series' name has been "Battle for Dream Island" (with the word for being LOWERCASE; for, rather than capitalized; For) since its very beginning in 2010, as seen in the intro in the very first episode or video in the series, in all of the official logotype in the series or officially relating to it, and in the channel about section's first line. A possible explanation for this is that the show's subreddit, which was made in 2012, has the word for being capitalized, a likely reason for this is that the person who made it in 2012 didn't know that the series' actual official/correct name has the word for as lowercase.
