The presentation of characters' gender and pronouns in Battle for Dream Island has evolved considerably over the years in order to account for characters who fall outside of the gender binary. This policy explains how the Battle for Dream Island Wiki handles genders and pronouns for characters who appear in Battle for Dream Island.
Pronouns
Pronouns of a character must be sourced from official media. Unsourced pronouns in infoboxes should be either backed up with a source, or they will be removed. The exception to this rule applies to characters who are explicitly defined to be a specific gender by design, such as Cake's Dad, Purple Girl with Wind Hair and Angry Eyes, and gender variation recommended characters.
Pronouns listed in infoboxes must be in accordance with the source priority. Contradictory pronouns from lower priority sources can be listed exclusively as a group citation marked as "note".
Gender
Gender is generally assumed to be the same as their pronouns in the case of binary genders, such as he/him would equal male or she/her would equal female. In the case of characters who use they/them or multiple sets of pronouns, a citation will be required to clarify a gender. The exception to this rule are Algebralian characters, who are established to be genderless.
Characters with unknown pronouns and genders
When referring to a character who does not have their pronouns revealed in any official media, editors must use singular they pronouns and mark the character's gender as "Unknown" in their respective infobox, but leave the pronouns field blank.
When official media has revealed a character's pronouns or uses an additional set, the pronouns can be replaced, and a source for newly revealed pronouns must be provided.
Recommended character creator genders
As established in the BFDIA Recommended Character forum, Jacknjellify's interpretation of a recommended character is wholly separate from the recommender's details, and specified information such as gender is subject to change in official portrayals of episodes. As such, the original gender of a recommender's character is not honored on the wiki and will not be treated as official media. However, information about a recommended character's original info when recommended, including gender, can be added to a page if it is appropriately marked as being the recommender's original idea.
In the case of gender and pronouns, this info can be added to infoboxes only as a group citation marked as "note" and must be clearly marked as the recommender's original idea.
