Black Hole and Pen were close friends in Battle for BFDI and were placed on the same team: Death P.A.C.T.. Pen occasionally uses Black Hole as an item to help his team win several contests.
Despite being on different teams in TPOT, Black Hole had several conflicts with Pen due to him viewing death as a joke.
In "Getting Teardrop to Talk", Pen asks Black Hole what they are supposed to do in the contest. Pen tries to give Black Hole a high five after winning the challenge.
In "The Four is Lava", Pen, along with Bottle and Remote, repeatedly chant for Black Hole to swing them back to Four's mouth every time they get pushed off.

In "Why Would You Do This on a Swingset", Black Hole is seen next to Pen. Pen is then pushed into Black Hole by a fork Gelatin threw at him.
In "Today's Very Special Episode", Pen tries to ask Black Hole if he could help with the challenge, but Tree interrupts him before proceeding to do the same.
In "Fortunate Ben", Pen gives Black Hole a desolate look seconds before he's obliterated by Four.
In "This Episode Is About Basketball", Pen tries to use Black Hole to win the contest by throwing balls at him; this does nothing.
In "I SAID CAREFUL!!!", Pen is used by Liy to knock Fanny out of Black Hole's orbit.
In "The Power of Four", Pen asks if there are still CloudYAY members in there, which Black Hole confirms as true.
Episodes suggesting a conflict[]
In "Return of the Rocket Ship", Black Hole calls out Pen and the others for heading towards the Evil Canyon, thinking the emeralds are there, but this plan contradicts their goal of preventing death, as the Evil Canyon is a deadly place, and that they have forgotten about Pillow, who Four presumably killed. The team flaps their arms in response, showing that they do not care, appalling Black Hole.
Having been on the same team together, in "The Worst Day of Black Hole's Life", Pen takes advantage of Black Hole's passive nature by threatening his life, in order for Black Hole to stop sucking up all of his team's blocks. This leaves Black Hole to disown Pen, shaming him for viewing death as "just a game".
In "Category One", when Pen and his team go to Black Hole to help them get to the Giant David, he agrees and says it's nice to see Liy again. Pen gives him an irritated look after he greets Liy but not him.

Among all the contestants who could be voted to join BFDIA, if counting Book, Puffball, and Yellow Face joining and TV being the host, they were the two most voted contestants out of everyone who did not join.
In "The Power of Four", Black Hole was the sixth contestant to be tagged (after Fanny, Tennis Ball, Yellow Face, Book, Price Tag and Pillow), while Pen was the sixth-to-last to be tagged (after Winner, TV, Snowball, Pencil, Golf Ball and Donut).
In the Latin American Spanish dub of BFDI, both characters are voiced by Charly Wolfy.
