This is a list of running gags in the BFDI series.

TV displaying the number 2,763 in "Gardening Zero" as the reverberation units of a large David saying "Aw, Seriously?"

2,763 (two thousand, seven hundred sixty-three) is a recurring number in the Battle for Dream Island series, most commonly used as the number of miles from the Plains to Yoyleland. In metric units, this distance translates to exactly 4446.617472 km.

BFDI (acronym)[]

Main article: Acronyms

Throughout the series, the acronym BFDI (short for the series name Battle for Dream Island) has also been humorously used to refer to other concepts, objects or jokes throughout the series itself.

Occurrences[]

BFDI walking[]

Tree---walk-bfb-16

Tree walking

BFDI walking is a kind of running gag, which consists in the fact that gait animation in the old BFDI style is used in new episodes to this day. This is because walking animation is very difficult to depict, and a blank walking animation is used as a time saver.

BFDI walking is used in almost every episode. An exception is "Let's Raid The Warehouse": in the shopping selection scene, Teardrop approached Gelatin without using the prepared walking animation. Also, Blocky approached Woody with his gift without using the prepared walking animation.

COME HOST NOW!!![]

Main article: COME HOST NOW!!!

COME HOST NOW!!! is used in Battle for Dream Island Again when a host dies by getting crushed by Spongy, with Golf Ball calling a random number from the dead host's phone to host. The person who comes to host is introduced in the previous episode, according to a pattern followed in the previous episodes. Its first appearance was in "Lots of Mud".

Occurrences[]

Check-it Eyebrows[]

Main article: Check-it Eyebrows
Gelatin eyebrows

Notice the two identical eyebrows facing the same way.

Check-it Eyebrows are frequently used in BFDI when a character is looking at something while having visible eyebrows. Both eyebrows look like an "r" shape and face the same way. This animation graphic is used globally on object shows. A user named SammyShinx coined the term "Check-it Eyebrows" because they reminded him of a face on ROBLOX called "Check it". Since then, staff such as Cary Huang and Satomi Hinatsu have used the name, making it one of the few fan names to be made official. So far (not counting irregular designed and faceless characters like David, Dora, Yellow Face, and Black Hole), every single character on BFDI has had Check-it Eyebrows except for Evil Leafy, and every character who doesn't use normal BFDI assets. Teardrop was the first ever character to have Check-it Eyebrows.

Commercials[]

BFDI Commercials

Commercials (also known as advertisements) are a running gag, and are mostly introduced by Yellow Face. Usually, Yellow Face and some stick figures are the only characters featured during these commercials, except during the Non-Slip Shoes So Ha commercial.

Diamonds[]

Diamonds are a species of gems only mentioned in BFDIA. According to Book, only diamonds are allowed in Gem School.

Metal Leafy dodging pattern

Leafy doing the dodging pattern in BFDIA 2.

The dodging pattern is a running gag in the Battle for Dream Island series. It refers to a specific series of moving projectiles set up in the same way that a character dodges in exactly the same way to dodge it each time it shows up.

Occurrences[]

  • In "Lofty", Leafy uses the pattern to avoid nails that are thrown at her by Snowball and Eraser.
  • In "Gardening Hero", Spongy does the pattern when Firey and Leafy fire lasers at his spaceship.
  • In "Get Digging", Leafy uses the pattern again, now avoiding acid spitballs fired by Needle.
  • In "Meaty", Fries and Tennis Ball use the pattern to avoid FreeSmart's "paint bullets" with in Fries' new car.
  • In "Insectophobe's Nightmare 4", Fries dodges a pattern of bugs thrown at him by Golf Ball. However, unlike the previous ones, this gets subverted as he ends up colliding with one of the stray bugs in the path that stabs and kills him. Marking the first time that someone has failed to dodge projectiles in this pattern.
  • In "The Four is Lava", the pattern gag returns for the first time in seven years (so far, chronologically in 5 years) with Puffball using it to avoid cannonballs fired by Spongy's jet.
  • In "Category One", Pillow tries to shoot her flamethrower at a Dragon which leads it to do the dodging pattern.

Trivia[]

  • Leafy and Fries are the only characters who did the pattern twice.
  • Spongy is the only character not voiced by Michael Huang who has done the pattern, unless you count Tennis Ball in BFDIA 8 (even though he didn't say anything).
  • Leafy and Spongy have both been on the receiving and offending end of this pattern at least once.
  • The dodging pattern always had two projectiles at the start except for BFDIA 8 and BFB 15, given Eraser and Snowball tried to pop Leafy's balloon with nails (BFDI 11), Firey and Leafy shot lasers at Spongy (BFDI 20), Needle and Gelatin shot acid spitballs at Leafy (BFDIA 2), Golf Ball and Tennis Ball threw bugs at Fries (BFDIA 12), but Pencil shot paint bullets at Fries and Tennis Ball (BFDIA 8), and Spongy fired cannonballs at Puffball by his jet (BFB 15).
  • In BFDI 11, BFDI 20, BFDIA 8 and BFB 15, Leafy, Spongy, Fries and Puffball respectively had to squish themselves because they couldn't fit in the gap at the end.
  • BFDIA 8 was the first time the dodging pattern was done vertically.
  • Fries is the only person who failed to complete the pattern, as there was an extra bug near the beginning in his instance in Insectophobe's Nightmare 4.

"Don't call me Needy!"[]

Main article: Needle/Slaps

"Don't call me Needy!" is a running gag by Needle, where she slaps people for saying the word "Needy" as she dislikes being called it, mistaking it as calling her "needy" which is a negative trait containing high demands or needs. The only time she doesn't slap someone for calling her "Needy" is Firey in "BFDI Is Back".

Fork[]

A fork

Forks are items that are seen in BFB first appearing in "Getting Teardrop to Talk". They have a simple, two-dimensional, trident-shaped design and are mostly associated with Gelatin.

The forks are the size of kitchen forks, but they only have 3 prongs. The shapes of the forks resemble pitchforks, and they appear to be extremely dark purple.

This same purple color is also used in other minor objects that have been made after BFB or been made before BFB, but have been redesigned.

Face planting[]

Face planting is a moment when a character falls over face-first. Face plants are often seen throughout the BFDI series, Mainly when a character falls down the stairs, gets pushed, or other causes, with the end result being the character laying on their face.

Occurrences[]

Non-canon[]

Laughing Crowd[]

Where are these guys coming from? This is getting out of control!

Anothernamefailure

The first instance of this gag.

The laughing crowd refers to a joke featured in a few episodes of Battle for Dream Island and Battle for Dream Island Again, in which the team up for elimination walks past a crowd comprised of clones of the safe contestants laughing in a mocking manner. The joke first appears in "Lofty", where the Squishy Cherries and the Squashy Grapes laugh at Another Name for losing. A bigger crowd appears in "A Leg Up In The Race", where Another Name loses again. The gag returns in "Get Digging", where a huge, 3D rendered crowd comprised of Team No-Name and Leafy mocking W.O.A.H. Bunch. It then reappears in "Insectophobes Nightmare 3", where the roles are reversed. Another 3D rendered crowd appears in "Taste the Sweetness", with the recommended characters chanting along with Pencil. In "Lots Of Mud," When the The Beautiful Face Devotion Institute is going to the Cake At Stake arena, Fries is laughing in the crowd and holding the "Loser!" sign.

Mouth twitching[]

If we're gonna smile, we're gonna smile real big!

Main article: Mouth Twitching

Mouth twitching is a gag originating from Battle for BFDI. It occurs whenever a contestant reacts to someone else's elimination by zooming into their mouth and showing a quick, slight twitch (either upwards or downwards).

Occurrences[]

Music slowdown[]

There are several times when the music slows down in BFDI, sometimes in an unsettling way.

Organ denial[]

Main article: Organ denial

Organ denial is a gag where an object will refer to an object as if it had a specific trait such as an organ, only for that object (or another) to deny that they have that trait. It has appeared a few times throughout the series so far.

Occurrences[]

In "Insectophobe's Nightmare 2", Bubble confirms that her species does not have a brain when she forgets what Announcer said about the cancellation of BFDI.

In "Return of the Hang Glider", Pen idiomatically says that Eraser has a brain because he agreed to Pen wanting Dream Island. Eraser confirms his species do not have brains. In "Balancing P.A.C.T.", Pen says that tennis balls have brains and erasers don't. This is later referenced in "Intruder Alert", when Ruby tries to say that if erasers don't have brains and Pencil's head is an eraser, then Pencil must not have a brain.

Pillow confirmed her species lacks a heart in "The Worst Day of Black Hole's Life", in response to Remote idiomatically saying that she was pure of heart, deep down.

Non-canon[]

Pin confirmed her species lacks a brain in the non-canon BFDI short called "All BFDI soundboard videos! (compilation)", in response to when Tennis Ball asked for an explanation of what a soundboard video is.

Eraser once again states that erasers don't have brains in "Twosday" after Coiny asks him how he could possibly forget his own birthday.

Phobe’s Nightmare[]

Phobe’s Nightmare is a running gag that occurs in the episode titles. It started off with Insectophobe's Nightmare and these episodes have a themed title:

Rapid retravel announcement[]

But first we have to get *speaking faster* Pen & Woody & Eraser & Golf Ball & Leafy & Coiny & Rocky & Match & Spongy & Tennis Ball & Blocky & Pencil & Pin & Snowball & Bubble.

Rapid retravel announcement is a gag where, after a challenge where many contestants are missing/dead. the host will announce all of their names in a quick succession.

Occurrences[]

"There isn't enough room up here"[]

That's better.

Main article: There isn't enough room up here

"There isn't enough room up here" is a phrase and running gag that is commonly said by Gelatin. It began in "Get Digging", and its latest appearance was "The Four is Lava", spoken by Gelatin, or "You Know Those Buttons Don't Do Anything, Right?", spoken by Golf Ball.

Occurrences[]

  • In "Get Digging", Gelatin says the quote for the first time and pushes Book, Ice Cube, and Spongy off of Puffball, leaving just himself and Needle still on Puffball's back.
  • The audio from "Get Digging" is later recycled in "Get in the Van", where Gelatin this time pushes Golf Ball, Tennis Ball and Rocky, leaving himself, Firey, and Fries, who angrily asks Gelatin what he was thinking. Gelatin then replies, "I told you, there isn't enough room up here."
  • Gelatin says the line again in "Don't Dig Straight Down", this time re-recorded and standing on Bomby. He pushes Naily off, and him and Barf Bag are launched into the air when Bomby explodes.
  • At the start of "The Four is Lava", Gelatin says, "You know, Flower, there isn't enough room up here." Flower then agrees and pushes him into the lava, causing him to scream and die painfully while Flower puts on a pair of sunglasses from Cloudy's Collection and grins.
  • In "You Know Those Buttons Don't Do Anything, Right?", Golf Ball references the quote by saying, "Huh, I guess there really wasn't enough room up there", when her team falls after trying to climb onto Puffball.

Gallery[]

Trivia[]

  • According to the official character guide, the reason Gelatin pushes people off of things is because he's claustrophobic.
  • During the first instance of the line, Golf Ball does know what's about to happen and immediately starts protesting after Gelatin says it in her presence, implying that he may have done this more times offscreen.

Smile widen[]

Main article: Smile widen

In Battle for Dream Island: The Power of Two, it has become somewhat of a running gag to have a character make a certain expression before they are eliminated, usually the same expression of defeat. Within the community, this has also become a popular joke due to its appearances.

"Value is in the eye of the beholder!"[]

"Value is in the eye of the beholder!" is a phrase spoken by Nickel in "Getting Puffball To Think About Rollercoasters" and "The Seven Wonders of Goiky", to Naily and Cake respectively. Coincidentally, this leads to both of their eliminations in "Fishes and Dishes" and "Balancing P.A.C.T." and surprisingly, Nickel himself was eliminated in "Oneirophobe's Nightmare".
