Noctiluca yoylean (pronounced /nɔk.tɪˈluːkə jɔɪ.jəˈliːən [Nock-till-LOO-ka YOY-uh-lee-an][1][2]) (Yoylese: ⅄y▽ᖗꕈ-⊣▽⊸ ᖙyᖙ-]⊸⅄) is a type of parasitic fungus discovered by Fries during "Respect to the Wicked". Noctiluca yoylean is depicted to be a cyan, glowing algae; or a warmly colored glowing mushroom.
Habitat[]
The Noctiluca yoylean seems to live in dark places such as caves, as fungi need dark and damp places to survive. The fungus takes various forms, such as glowing cyan algae and vines and yellow mushrooms. It is likely that Noctiluca yoylean lives in multiple other caves.
Effects[]
- Bioluminescence: In "Respect to the Wicked", Noctiluca yoylean is found by Fries while he was digging. He eats one of the samples and turns into a bioluminescent cyan.
- Regenerative properties: In the end credits scene of "Respect to the Wicked", the algae is shown to regenerate the affected object after death, specifically by reversing time. This later comes into play in "Start the Shift", when Tennis Ball injects the regenerative properties into a chunk of Yoylite, giving it the ability to manipulate and travel through time.
- Mood swings: While Fries is under the influence of Noctiluca yoylean, he is shown to constantly change moods from jerky to friendly. This could be why he is so fine being around Evil Leafy.
- Insatiable hunger: When Needle accidentally stabs the dirt cake that Fries is holding, Fries complains and says that he's going to starve.
- Chemical reaction with Yoylite: While around Yoylite, there'll be a chemical reaction between the two that results in the affected object exploding after a violent enough collision.
Coverage[]
In "Respect to the Wicked", Fries digs underground in search of Coiny's dirt cake. After falling into a cave filled with Noctiluca yoylean, he continues to dig up samples of the ground to eat, and glows a bioluminescent cyan as a result of eating the algae.
In "Start the Shift", the time-altering regenerative properties of the algae are exploited by Tennis Ball by injecting it into the Yoylite. This gives him the ability to travel through time.
Trivia[]
- Its name is possibly grammatically incorrect, as the correct term would be Nocticula yoylensis.
- Its pronunciation is not certain, as Book pronounces it Nock-till-la YOY-uh-lee-an in "Respect to the Wicked", while Golf Ball pronounces it Nock-till-loo-ka YOY-lee-an in "Start the Shift".
