“ | Open mouth, yeah yeah yeah! Eat ice cream, yeah yeah yeah! So you can taste the sweetness, so you can taste the sweetness! | ” |
— Pencil and the Recommended Characters
|
"Taste the Sweetness" is the 10th episode of Battle for Dream Island Again, the 35th episode in-universe and the 75th episode overall. It was released on Friday, March 1, 2024 at 10:58:46 PM PST (GMT-8).
In this episode, after Gelatin is eliminated, the three previous teams are disbanded and reformed into new teams, Fries and The Beautiful Face Devotion Institute. The two teams are tasked with making and selling ice-cream for customers. Unfortunately for one of the teams, their lackluster planning causes the other team to slip by with ease.

Plot[]
Before Cake At Stake[]
The episode begins with Needle, Bomby, Ice Cube, and Ruby playing 'Ring Around the Slammer,' dancing around a Trash Compactor from last episode. Ice Cube and Needle both laugh. Needle then states that everyone were the only ones to survive the trash compactor, Bomby then suggests forming an alliance between them, naming it "Taking out the trash". Ruby pulls Ice Cube away, stating that this would betray the 'FreeSmart Loyalty Rule.' Ice Cube disagrees, saying that FreeSmart won't last forever and that it'd be good to have other allies when FreeSmart got disbanded. Upon hearing this, Ruby puts Ice Cube into a trash compactor and crushes her.
Puffball Speaker Box announces that it is time for Cake at Stake. Needle wonders how they could do Cake At Stake when most of the contestants (especially the Team No-Name members, who are supposed to attend Cake At Stake) are dead, with the closest recovery center being in Yoyleland. PSB says that they could take Lewis' second car. Needle asks how they could drive it if Lewis owns the car, to which Bomby stabs Needle into the Puffball Speaker Box. This causes PSB to vomit continuously, expelling Lewis from the car and propelling the car forwards once all the contestants were inside. The car reaches the Goiky Highway, a three-dimensional spaghetti-resembling road spanning the Goiky Canal.
The scene cuts to the contestants from last episode still stuck in the Underworld (now with Ice Cube), swimming up a lava stream. Suddenly, Pencil is lifted into the air and spun. This is because, in the "BFDI Universe", Ruby is in Yoyleland using the HPRC to recover Pencil. Back in the Underworld, Pencil is popped into confetti, and returns to the BFDI Universe. Pencil states that she has no recollection of her time dead in the Underworld. Then, the rest of the characters in the Underworld are spun and recovered, alongside the other dead characters.
Cake At Stake[]
Cake At Stake takes place inside Lewis' second car's trunk. Tennis Ball wins the prize, with "a record breaking 40,984 votes." His prize is a Swap Token, which can be used to forcibly swap a contestant onto a team. The cake for this episode is gasoline. TB and GB get lit ablaze with it. Down to Fries and Gelatin, they both begin to eat themselves in stress. Ultimately, Gelatin is eliminated with 21,768 votes and Gelatin tells Puffball Speaker Box to hide it from the Announcer as he scares him, which she agrees to do so.
Before being fully flung out, Tennis Ball gives Gelatin his laser pointer, and Gelatin gives Tennis Ball his Revolutionary Headphones. The headphones are notably missing its "Volume Up" button. Gelatin is then fully flung into the Weak Trembling Fortress with Firey and Rocky, proceeding to then tie all their legs together.
Meanwhile, we hear Flower's voice in the driver's seat stating that the gas pedal doesn't function, crashing the car. After the car crashes, she runs off into the horizon before everyone else gets out. The intro plays.

Before the contest[]
After the intro, Pin and Coiny discuss how it's great to see him again, though his voice is still swapped with Needle's due to Bomby's CaS prize last episode. Meanwhile, Tennis Ball and Golf Ball admire how powerful the Swap Token's potential is, stressing how they must use it at the most strategic time. On FreeSmart, Book and Ice Cube marvel at how they make it to the final 13, with Ice Cube doing her "ugly face" as celebration. Pencil sees this in disgust, but Ice Cube does it once more upside down. Just like last episode, Ice Cube demonstrates how an upside-down ugly-face is a beautiful face. Coiny was the first to be embraced of the beautiful face and Spongy and they both switch to Ice Cube's team to be more close to Ice Cube and after, so does the rest of W.O.A.H Bunch except Pin, as she is worried about the team gone forever but Nickel enthusiasts her to switch like he said last time in "Yeah, Who? I Wanna Know" when the contestants force Pin to switch to W.O.A.H Bunch. Tennis Ball is also interested in this face but Golf Ball shouts at him not to as they were traitors in "Get in the Van" because FreeSmart didn't want to stay in Team No-Name but them when Golf Ball keeps refusing, Tennis Ball uses the Swap Token to bring Golf Ball into the team. Once formed, Fries was the only one left in Team No-Name while everyone (except Golf Ball and Ice Cube) decides to switch the name to "The Beautiful Face Devotion Institute" while Team No-Name has been changed to "Fries" as Fries was the only one in the team.

Contest[]
Ruby spins the Contest Wheel and it picks to sell the most ice cream.
The contest is to sell the most ice cream before the first winter snowflake hits the ground. At first, team TBFDI is indecisive. Needle picks up Ice Cube in order to cool their potential ice cream down, smashing her to bits. At first, the team mourns Ice Cube's shattering, but they immediately become indifferent to it. We then see Fries kidnap Bomby inside a sack.
Golf Ball, although upset at her team's betrayal, volunteers herself as team manager. She commands Coiny, Ruby and Tennis ball to be on food-making duty, Pencil, Nickel and Needle to be on advertising duty, and finally, Book, Spongy and Pin to man the ice-cream stand. They start walking towards Gelatin's Abandoned Shadeshouse, as that will be where their operation takes place.
Meanwhile, Fries takes Bomby to a shaded area nearby. He tells Bomby to get digging, as the ingredients for ice cream are "probably underground." Bomby refuses and complains, as he is on team TBFDI, but after a while, is entranced into digging for Fries.
Inside Gelatin's shadeshouse, Barbecue Sauce informs his coworker, Pineapple, that Gelatin has been eliminated. To celebrate their freedom from Gelatin's management, Barbecue Sauce hands Pineapple a "token" - the "Volume Up" button which he stole from Gelatin's headset. He also says that they will never be bothered by customers again, as he put up caution tape all around the restaurant. However, team TBFDI barges in and removes the tape, advertising free ice creams. To Barbecue Sauce's horror, this causes an influx of customers to barge in, flooding the doorway.
Tennis Ball, Ruby and Coiny find the ingredients safe, however, neither force nor code guessing could open it. Coiny goes over to Barbecue Sauce for the code. Barbecue Sauce recognizes Coiny, but is suspicious as his voice is that of Needle's. Though, through sheer willpower, his voice swaps back. He gets the code - 2-1-7-6-8.
Pencil, Needle and Nickel are going upstairs to the roof. Needle brings the bowl with Ice Cube's remains to keep an eye on it. She places it on top of the Steakhouse sign. Pencil then tells them about doing marketing, addressing the others as "Needle and American Five Cent Denomination." A montage commences with all of them putting advertisement posters around the stakehouse. Golf Ball finds Needle, and commands her to find the absent Bomby.
Afterwards, it cuts to Pin and Book quarrelling, with Book trying to convince an obstinate Pin that she and Ice Cube were required to attend Match's dance party in BFDIA 5a and were unable to swing with Pin. She tries to tell Pin they'll swing with her next time and that they should focus on the challenge. Spongy cuts in informing the bickering two that he had finished building the stand, much to their surprise.
Coiny enters the code for the pantry, which successfully opens, and he and Ruby run inside to find ingredients to create the ice cream. Ruby finds some cane sugar, vanilla extract and a jug of milk while Coiny finds a tub of Gelatin's "pre-baked ice cream". However, Ruby discovers that it expired in August of 2012, over a year and a half ago (in-universe). Coiny then points out Tennis Ball's disappearance.
Meanwhile, Tennis Ball avoids the customers around the stakehouse and sneaks outside. He finds the car crash from Meaty, then finds the Yoylite perfectly intact. He starts laughing maniacally.
In the shady area, Needle finds Fries and asks him of Bomby's whereabouts. Fries denies any knowledge but Needle grabs Bomby out of the hole, surprised by what he's doing. Needle attempts to talk to Bomby to try snap him out of it, but he remains unresponsive. Fries tells Needle to "put Bomby down and get digging, Needy!" This angers Needle, so she slaps him. However, Fries places a shovel in her hand, entrancing her to become a digger, and digs.
The scene then fades to Gelatin's Abandoned Shadeshouse where Pencil walks up the stairs and begins chanting in an attempt to attract customers. She encourages several recommended characters to continue chanting along with her. Pencil motivates them to chant once again where a humongous crowd of clones shout the slogan continuously. After the chanting was over, Nickel decides to ask Pencil that he make a remix and the crowd goes silent. He then asks them to make it a dubstep remix where they all excitedly agree.
Coiny and Ruby continue making the ice cream mixture with various ingredients and pass it over to the "front desk" for Pin, Book and Spongy. Propeller Hat says that they want some ice cream, but Pin unsuccessfully attempts to sell them some, disturbing them with her limblessness. She offers Book and Spongy to take her place, and Book enthusiastically agrees. Book then rips out one of her pages to form an ice cream cone, and hands it to Dice. However, Dice walks away uninterested, saying they "already ate the Grapes of Wrath a few years ago". Then, a group of eight Dominoes asks Book if they could have a bite. Book says that she'll need to split it eight ways. She pushes the ice cream inside Spongy and jumps on him, oozing out eight of Spongy's pores. This causes the Dominoes to exclaim in disgust and walk away, much to Book's dismay.
Book shouts over to Coiny and Ruby, saying that they need more ice cream. Coiny immediately accepts the job and the two start collecting ingredients once more.
Tennis Ball calls out for Golf Ball who insists for him to not distract her from her "team-leading". However, TB eventually convinces GB to come by telling her about the piece of Yoyleite they could research. GB instantly rushes out to the backyard, dragging TB with her, peeking through Tennis Ball's microscope made out of Gelatin's old headphones. The two excitedly discuss their potential prestige after writing academic papers about its crystalline structure.
Meanwhile, inside the steakhouse, Pineapple and BBQ Sauce are overwhelmed by the influx of customers, drowning into the crowd. Suddenly, BBQ sauce gets the idea to lodge the "Volume Up" token in the fire alarm. Pineapple throws the button with great precision, causing the sprinklers to go off, and for all the customers to leave. Inside the safe, this also causes Ruby and Coiny's ice cream to melt away.
However, soon after, the token falls to the floor. This triggers it, sending out a "Volume Up" signal. Outside, GB and TB are almost done with the crystalline structure diagram. However, the signal reaches the microscope, causing it to rattle. This startles TB, who panics, scribbling all over his diagram. In a fit of rage, he kicks the microscope up to the steakhouse sign, where Ice Cube's shards bowl is.
The bowl topples down, releasing the ice shards, alongside some snow. Fries, who notices the snow, swiftly runs over to the safe and grabs the expired ice cream. He then announces that he actually has Ice Cream to eat. All the previously-disappointed customers flock to Fries. Meanwhile, Ice Cube's snowflake finally falls to the floor.
Puffball Speaker Box declares the challenge over, as a snowflake has fallen, signifying the "start of winter." She announces that Fries has fed 200 people, whereas team Beautiful-Facers fed none, making them up for elimination. After he realizes he won, Fries celebrates by cheering.
Seasonal Shift Version[]
In Seasonal Shift, during this version of the contest, Shopping Cart comes out of the Ice Cream shop and slips on one of Pencil's advertisements, and ends up hitting a recommended character, causing all of them to scream and Pencil to get annoyed. When Grassy and Snowball steal the Ice Cream, the contestant in the stand changes to Woody. This change was due to the alternative theory where Woody was present to join the game, due to him surving BFDI 25. He would also switch to The Beautiful Face Devotion Institute from an unknown team in BFDIA.
Stinger[]
At night, Pineapple tells BBQ Sauce that maybe he could for some ice cream, and the latter gets mad. Meanwhile, Fries is waiting as the recommended characters that fell on the holes are coming out. He then tells the viewers to get digging, suggesting that BFDIA 11 is probably underground.

Elimination[]
- Chronologically, this marks Gelatin's first time being in the bottom 2, as well as his first elimination in BFDI history if him getting second place in BFB is not counted.
- This episode marks the lowest ratio of votes upon elimination from one episode to another, with Gelatin getting less than 0.4% more votes upon elimination than Yellow Face last episode, having less than 100 votes more than him.

Continuity references[]
- Golf Ball makes her struggling face from "Crybaby!" as Tennis Ball pulls her into The Beautiful Face Devotion Institute.
- The Beautiful Face Devotion Institute and the Challenge Wheel wedge that says "Brackets, Factors, Decimals, and Inches" mark two instances of the BFDI acronym being used in-universe.
- Coiny and Nickel causing a distortion while standing next to each other references "Get in the Van" and "The Long-lost Yoyle City".
- Fries asking Bomby to dig underground is a reference from "Get Digging".
- Other references to that episode include Golf Ball assigning her teammates into groups with different tasks and Pencil accusing her of not assigning herself a job, to which Golf Ball replies "I don't want to get into this debate again."
- Pencil chants her "Yeah, yeah, yeah" song when promoting ice-cream.
- The wedge on the Challenge Wheel that says "Take an incredible voyage around the sun" is a close reference to the BFB episodes "How Loe Can You Grow?" and "A Taste of Space", both of which have plots involving the Sun.
- Tennis Ball tries 2,763 as a passcode amongst others:
- 2010 is a reference to the year BFDI aired its first episode.
- 1338 is a reference to "Hurtful!", as it refers to the number of days Leafy claims one can survive without eating.
- Some of the posters made for TBFDI's ice cream contain references to the No More Advertisements Foundation ad from "Insectophobe's Nightmare 2":
- There is a poster with a squished happy face and an arrow pointing to it saying "happy", resembling the "irritated" face from when the ad said ads are boring, frustrating, disgusting, and irritating.
- The "get free ice cream here" poster has a stick man taking off black glasses that resemble the glasses sold in the magazine from the ad.
- One poster has a happy stick man that resembles the stick man in the ad just before he receives his bumper sticker.
- The "Billy Bob Joe Approved" poster refers to Billy Bob Joe getting his name listed in the credits of the foundation's movie.
- Additionally, one poster contains an image of Chocolate Ice Cream Cone, a recommended character from "Reveal Novum".
- This is the second episode of BFDIA where Bomby gets kidnapped, this time by Fries, the first being "Intruder Alert" by Yellow Face.
- The scene where Puffball Speaker Box quickly names the contestants that need to be recovered is also a reference to "Barriers and Pitfalls", "Are You Smarter Than a Snowball?", and "Lick Your Way to Freedom" except instead of words, the episode uses scenes from the last episode and Ice Cube dying at the start of the episode.
- The gold star Puffball Speaker Box gives to Book is the same one Four gives to Lollipop for her Four-themed party in "The Game Has Changed".
- The recommended characters running and chattering throughout this episode have the same sound and animation as the recommended characters set alight in "A Leg Up in the Race" and also have similar animation to the running characters portion of the hydrochloric acid scene in "Half a Loaf Is Better Than None".
- The huge smile Spongy makes when Golf Ball assigns him, Book, and Pin to work on the ice cream stand and then the subsequent frown he makes after Golf Ball finishes talking is a reference to the same smile turning into a frown that Spongy does when Firey Speaker Box lists the people up for elimination in "Don't Pierce My Flesh".
- During the elimination, Fries eating one of his fries and Gelatin eating himself is a call back to their cannibalistic habits in BFDI and BFB.
- The 3D portion of the scene where Pencil and several recommended characters singing the Ice Cream jingle is a close reference to "Get Digging" and "Insectophobe's Nightmare 3".
- Flower's inability to drive is referenced from "The Hidden Contestant".
- Needle asking Nickel "Who cares if you have two names because you're adopted?" is a reference to a similar line she said in "Well Rested".
- Gelatin wants Puffball Speaker Box to keep the secret of being eliminated from the "Weird speaker box" which is a reference from "SOS (Save Our Show)" when the Announcer explains that Gelatin has never been eliminated in BFDI history.
- When Tennis Ball gives Gelatin his laser pointer, he says "Now I have two!". This is similar to Pin saying "Now I have three!" after receiving a Gratitude Token from Four and Firey saying the same line after getting another half of a pair of scissors in "Vomitaco".
- When Pencil walks up the stairs to the roof, her walking animation mirrors the one when she's walking up the stairs in "Lofty".
- When all of the dead characters are recovered, the order of the recovered contestants is the same as the order of the dead contestants in the previous episode, including Ice Cube, except for Pencil.
- Fries grabbing the expired pre-baked ice cream from the steakhouse references how Firey grabs another frisbee for Tennis Ball in The Reveal.
- Coiny and Ruby throw a jar of Cyanide, a jar of vomit that looks identical to the one in “Outbreak at Stake” and a green vial that looks similar to Test Tube from Inanimate Insanity into the ice cream.
Cultural references[]
- The "Ring Around the Slammer" game played at the start of the episode is a clear parody of the children's game of "Ring Around the Rosies".
- When Lewis gets hit by Puffball Speaker Box's "rainbow substance" (as referred to in "Get in the Van"), he does the Family Guy death pose.
- When Coiny pulls out the Pre-Baked Ice Cream, Ruby points out how it was expired in August, of 2012, this is a reference to the show Bar Rescue, where in Season 3 Episode 32, when the inspectors found out about the bar's margarita cherry mixture being expired for over a year.
- Six of the recommended characters are based on the Nintendo Switch, which released exactly 3 years after the events of this episode chronologically.
- When Tennis Ball goes out to get the Yoylite, he dodges customers in a way that looks similar to the 1981 game Frogger.
- The dice recommended character mentioned having eaten "The Grapes of Wrath" in response to Book advertising her "ice cream, infused with literature". The Grapes of Wrath is an American realist novel written by John Steinbeck and published in 1939.
- Needle's face after shattering Ice Cube looks a lot like the pleading face emoji.
- Nickel's request for the jingle to be made into a dubstep remix is in reference to remix culture in general, as dubstep remixes were extremely prevalent around the time BFDIA takes place.
- With Thomas Ridgewell voicing Pineapple, this led to two references to Eddsworld being planted into the episode.
- Pineapple's lines "Holy citrus in a steakhouse!" and "Holy trinket in a trash compactor!" is a reference to a similar gag in Eddsworld by a character named Tom, also voiced by Ridgewell. The "trash compactor" part is a reference to the previous episode. This gag was also performed by Nickel in "Why Would You Do This on a Swingset".
- In addition, Pineapple's existence is either a reference to Tom's dad being a pineapple in Eddsworld, or the "suddenly pineapples" gag from asdfmovie.
- One of the passcodes Tennis Ball puts to Gelatin's vault is "02319". This likely references Code 2319 from Monsters Inc., which is called when a human child and a monster make contact.
- Another passcode "02763" made the Samsung ringtone when put into the lock. Though, this could be a coincidence.
- One of the challenges on the challenge wheel was to "Run to that rock over there and back". This likely references the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy V", which features a scene where SpongeBob (as the Quickster) bets the narrator he can run to a mountain and back, only to stand where he is.
- The recommended characters Fries, Meatball and Milkshake that appear during the scene where the recommended characters run into the holes dug by Bomby and Needle are references to the Adult Swim show Aqua Teen Hunger Force, resembling the main characters Frylock, Meatwad and Master Shake respectively.
- The 3D scene on the Goiky Highway may be a reference to the music video for the Gorillaz song "19-2000", which also features typically two-dimensional characters driving on a CGI highway with a loop-de-loop on it.
- When the recommended characters are eating Fries's ice cream, the Minecraft eating noise can faintly be heard.
- When Tennis Ball calls the viewers "tuberculites", it is likely a reference to "Tuberculosis" which is TB for short.
- Additionally, Match also called him "Tuberculosis" in "Thanks for 4 years of Thanks for 4 years!".
- The recommended character Unpleasant Gradient is a reference to the "this unpleasant gradient shows up at your front door" meme.
- The first stinger involving BBQ Sauce and Pineapple, based on the tone, length, and direction, is written like an asdfmovie gag.
- The splatter sounds for when the recommended characters were eating the expired ice cream are taken from Fruit Ninja.
Deaths[]
- Ice Cube was crushed by a trash compactor by Ruby.
- Needle tosses Ice Cube into a bowl, destroying her.
- Puffball Speaker Box was stabbed by Bomby using Needle in order to fuel up Lewis' second car. Needle was later taken out of PSB, reviving her after the contestants arrived at Yoyleland's HPRC (debatable).
Goofs[]
