Appearance[]
Tennis Ball appears to be a soft, slightly fuzzy tennis ball. His main body is chartreuse yellow, and his signature round stripes are white and cover part of his body. Inside his felt, he has a black, hollow, rubber core.
Changes[]
Early BFDI
- Tennis Ball's shade is poorly drawn and thinner.
- His stripes cut through his yellow outline.
- A thin line of red is visible at the edge of his stripe as a result of poor PNG importing.
- Tennis Ball's body is at various angles.
BFDI
- The red lines in his outline have been edited.
- Tennis Ball's body is now in the front.
Late BFDI—BFDIA
- Tennis Ball's shade is smoother and bigger. His stripes are now inside of his outline.
- His base shape is slightly rotated (about 27 degrees clockwise).
BFDIA 5d-8
- Tennis Ball's shade gains a more greenish tint.
- His outline is darker.
BFDIA 8-9
- Tennis Ball is pink due to Pencil's Paint Shooter.
BFDIA 9+
- Tennis Ball is yellow-green again after being recovered.
Designs[]
Personality[]
Tennis Ball is known to be intelligent and ideal for solving problems and creating new innovations, such as grotatoes. Unfortunately, he is somewhat clumsy because of his size and the fact that he's armless. He is also cautious and prefers to think first before making most decisions.
BFDI[]
Tennis Ball is a nice character overall and is generally more polite and less controlling than Golf Ball. In this season, Tennis Ball is more assertive and confident than later on, serving as the de facto leader of Another Name. He is a very calm character but can be rude to people if pushed and has his moments of being assertive and raising his usually monotone and nasally voice when losing patience.
BFDIA[]
Tennis Ball is portrayed as cautious and responsible, preferring to avoid chaos and sticking to plans. Though usually in good spirits, Tennis Ball struggles with self-doubt, particularly when he compares himself to Golf Ball, as seen in "Catch These Hands". He craves validation for his inventing abilities and is deeply affected by criticism. This is in stark contrast to his typical calm and quiet personality, showing that he is insecure about how people feel about him and his inventions compared to someone like Golf Ball.
As the season goes on, Tennis Ball becomes increasingly competitive and ruthless (as self-described, vicious) as he gets closer and closer to winning the season. For example, he builds an electric trap on the levers in "Airplanes in the Night Sky", tries to deceive the WTFers in "🥚" and ends up killing them, and tries to hold Needle hostage for favors in "Launch Party", showing he has become willing to use very morally dubious tactics to get ahead, in contrast to his usually fair and honest approach to the game. He also gives the WTFers to Evil Leafy in "Launch Party" and bribes the Fish Monster with a slide in "🥚". When the moment doesn't matter to the game, Tennis Ball usually still maintains his friendly and awkward personality in the season and is often shown to be reluctant to commit his dubious acts. In "I'm the Main Character", Tennis Ball tries to break his contract with Needle and kill her with Pin's drill head after he realizes that Needle's use of the contract could cause her to win, causing Book to call him a villain. Tennis Ball seems unperturbed by this, showing that he might be self-aware that he is being much more ruthless than usual. Tennis Ball then proceeds to make sarcastic remarks instead of showing any remorse when the rift in the Earth closes after 5 minutes as he expected, trapping Needle at the center of the Earth and possibly causing harm to her. Tennis Ball seems to be motivated purely by a desire to win, whatever it takes. This desire to win is implied to be in turn motivated by his aforementioned insecurity, as he believes that he is seen as inferior to Golf Ball. In "Shattered!", it is further shown that Tennis Ball's competitive spirit comes from his desire to win for Golf Ball, even though Golf Ball actually disapproves of his methods. Even after she renounces him, Tennis Ball still wants to prove himself to her. This would seem to confirm that Tennis Ball's insecurity is the chief factor behind his dubious tactics in the season, rather than a mere desire for the prize.
BFB[]
Tennis Ball seems torn between his friendship with Golf Ball and his duty to the team. While he is clearly loyal to 8-Ball and the team, his long history with Golf Ball makes it difficult for him to fully reject her. This inner conflict suggests that while Tennis Ball values rules and order, he struggles when they conflict with personal relationships.
He is also aware of his relationship with the viewers and can be manipulative of that fact, such as in "Get to the Top in 500 Steps" when he tells Flower people will vote for her if she pushes him off of the stairs. This shows that Tennis Ball can be tactical when it benefits him. His suggestion wasn’t just a throwaway line; it was a deliberate attempt to manipulate Flower into hesitating or doubting her decisions, suggesting that Tennis Ball knows how to read situations and twist them to his advantage.
TPOT[]
Tennis Ball comes across as a character who values accuracy, is resourceful in challenging situations, and is also supportive of his teammates, showing a mix of practicality and empathy. His mistakes, while minor, humanize him and make him more relatable. His role in fixing and using the trebuchet in "You Know Those Buttons Don't Do Anything, Right?" indicates his importance to the team, as he is the one providing a tool necessary for their success in the challenge. Even though the plan doesn't work as intended (flinging the team back and forth), his efforts ultimately contribute to the team's victory, especially when Puffball steps in to help.
Him being separate from Golf Ball in "What's Up Bell's String?" marks a pivotal moment for Tennis Ball, as he must adjust and lead a new team without her. His idea to use glue as a strategy to trap other teams is practical but also backfires. His attempts to solve the situation, like gluing himself and TV together to "stick together", end up causing more problems, showing his tendency to overthink and accidentally worsen situations. However, he redeems himself in "Category One", after upgrading TV and giving him a metal base with wheels. He uses the refurbished TV to his team's advantage in order to distract a giant David so his teammates could lull him to sleep with milk.
Official Character Guide biography[]
Tennis Ball is curious, which is why he's always asking questions. He is easily amused by trivia, especially information that pertains to math. He doesn't shy away from speaking up if he knows the facts. His other hobbies include cooking rice cakes and enjoying rhymes.
He always hangs out with Golf Ball, but he lets her take the lead. Tennis Ball doesn't get along with the Announcer, who always seems to bully him for being clumsy.
Did You Know?: Despite everyone calling him clumsy, Tennis Ball is exceptionally talented at tightrope walking, especially when bandaged to others.
Abilities[]
- High intelligence: Alongside Golf Ball, Tennis Ball is one of the most intelligent contestants, but unlike her, his intelligence is more based on logic and reason instead of pure mathematics. He frequently assists Golf Ball in formulating plans and strategies. In addition, he seems to have a knack for inventing devices. He invented Grotatoes for Fries, built a trebuchet to assist his team in "Getting Teardrop to Talk" and "You Know Those Buttons Don't Do Anything, Right?", and was familiar with the Wall Teleporter.
- Bounciness: Due to his physical structure as a sentient tennis ball, Tennis Ball is quite bouncy, a trait which he uses for quick transportation in "Welcome Back" and helps him survive a fall after being pushed off a flight of stairs in "Get to the Top in 500 Steps" and falling of another flight of stairs in "Lofty" and using it to bounce off the cliff to get gemstones in "🥚".
- Self-resurrection: In "Well Rested", although he died eating the electric yoyleberries, he later came back to life to say something, then died again.
- Lip-reading: Although more of a skill, in "Catch These Hands", he is shown to be able to read other people's lips, like Book.
- Sticky Saliva: In "PointyPointyPointy ♫", Tennis Ball spits in a jar and uses his saliva as glue. This shows that his saliva has glue-like properties and can stick things together.
- Super Strength: in "Intruder Alert", we see him and Golf Ball knock down an tree with ease.
- Matter Creation: In "Meaty," we see him creating a satellite dish out of nothing using his legs, likely due to being an inventor.
Weaknesses[]
- Clumsiness: Tennis Ball is extremely clumsy becuase of his size and the fact that he is armless, which can cause him to hinder him winning challenges. He doesn't like being called clumsy. An example is in "Gardening Hero," when the Announcer calls Tennis Ball "that clumsy Tennis Ball," Tennis Ball gets mad and threatens to demagnitise him. In "The Glistening," the announcer calls him "clumsy," and Tennis Ball ends up demagnetizing him until he got sent to the TLC.
