Yoyle City (Yoylese: ᖙʏᖙ–] ▽ꕈᖗᖙ) is a semi-abandoned city in Yoyleland. The city is distinct for its purple grass, yellow haze, large number of skyscrapers, and for being the largest settlement in Goiky. It is first seen in "The Long-lost Yoyle City" and became the setting of BFDIA. It had been abandoned for a long period of time according to the characters' quotes on the city and judging from the inside of a building in the city. The reason why it is abandoned is unknown. The city speaks a form of English called Yoylese, which has its own writing system, however it's only seen inside the Science Museum. Billboards in the city use the Latin Alphabet.
Geography[]
Yoyle City is located in Yoyleland, below the base of Yoyle Mountain, and within a short distance from the Goiky Canal. The Yoyle River runs through the city, with 8 bridges crossing it. The city is surrounded by forest on all sides, including the coast. The city sprawls out from a central downtown on the Yoyle River, with suburban regions on the edges of the city. The downtown area is home to many skyscrapers, including the Yoyle Needy. The suburbs contain the Yoyle Stadium. Every building in the city is labeled as a business and is located in large square blocks with up to 25 buildings. There are also pools, trees, traffic lights, and telephone poles. The Yoyleland Flag is seen throughout the city, especially in the suburbs.
Mapping the city[]
Using Cary Huang's city generation program YoyleCityWords, written in Processing 1, the cities generation seed, and the heightmap, which has not been found yet, the city could be mapped, providing even more info about the city. As stated at Texas Object Hangout 2022, the heightmap is likely stuck in Cary's old laptop. Although the city cannot be loaded right now, in "The Long-lost Yoyle City", about half of the city is directly seen, and because the city blocks are all equal sized squares, the area and shape of these areas can be determined.
Coverage[]
The city appeared in "The Long-lost Yoyle City", "Well Rested", and "Welcome Back". In BFDIA 5e, the city was traveled through by FreeSmart. In BFDIA 6, Firey suggests that the contestants would live in the city, since Ruby glued the Recovery center to the ground, and they all agree to do so. Sometime after BFDIA 6, FreeSmart brought the Club House of Awesomeness into the city. This led to the setting of "Welcome Back". Most of the cities' coverage was in that episode, which was completely based there. By IDFB, years had passed and FreeSmart had set up camp on the Yoyle Needy, where they made diaries. It was revealed that the lens cap was on the camera the entire time, being the shows explanation for BFDI's hiatus. Next, the Grotato Farm was shown. This was used to grow grotatoes, Golf Ball's strain of potatoes that could grow in less sun, so that Fries could survive. Lastly, the Science Museum was shown, where Golf Ball had a flashback.
It appears again in "Well, Look Who It Is!", and features Firey, Ice Cube, Gelatin, and Rocky exploring it.
Structures and attractions[]
- Main article: List of buildings in Yoyle City
Yoyle City has 2 major attractions, 109,578 buildings, each with a place name, 14,400 distinct place names (including duplicates), 8 bridges, and multiple other locations the characters visit.
Attractions[]
- The highest and perhaps the most distinct building in the city is the famous Yoyle Needy.
- The Yoyle Needy is significantly larger than other buildings in the city. It takes up a whole block, unlike other buildings, and has a height of 210 meters, making it double the height of its surrounding buildings.
- As for interior, shown in "Welcome Back", there is a spiral stairwell going through the building.
- Firey was also seen in a cage hanging from the deck in "Welcome Back/IDFB 1".
- There is also a stadium in the city known as Yoyle Stadium. It is based off of an American football field, and the sport called "Yoyleball" is played here. Not much is known about the rules of Yoyleball, but it involves kicking a spiked ball across the field as shown in "Well, Look Who It Is!".
- The Yoyle Stadium is 3 by 4 blocks, or 150 by 200 meters. The court in the middle is 2 blocks, or 100 by 50 meters.
- The building appears to have seating rows that are 5 meters by 5 meters, however this is most likely non-canonical.
- There's a Science Museum with artifacts and objects which are used for special purposes, as seen in "Welcome Back".
- There is an Aerospace Manufacturing Plant shown in "Well Rested". There are many spaceships in this building.
- This is the largest building the city area-wise.
- The Evil Here Hotel is a hotel shown in "Well Rested" and is related to Evil Leafy in some way.
- The Yoyle Fountain is shown in "Well, Look Who It Is!" and is filled with a substance called Yoyle Oil.
- The Yoyle Transit is a metro station shown in "Well, Look Who It Is!".
- This metro station was once considered the 8th wonder of the world.
- The train can go incredibly fast, as it traveled 2,763 miles in a matter of minutes.
- There is a French bakery shown in "Well, Look Who It Is!". It has bread, cakes, and cookies.
- This bakery has been abandoned since 1338. This is perhaps the year Yoyle City as a whole was abandoned.
- Fries is spotted in a Grotato Farm in "Welcome Back".
Bridges and the Yoyle River[]
Yoyleland has a total of 8 bridges spanning the Yoyle River, connecting the 2 halves of the downtown and the rest of the city. The image on the left shows exact proportions for the first 5 bridges, in city blocks. 6 of the bridges are 3 blocks long, the third and eighth bridge are 4, and the southernmost bridge sticks out for being a whopping 11 city blocks long, across the widest part of the Yoyle River.
Abandonment[]
Prior to Yoyle City's abandonment[]
In "Spore Day", it is revealed that Book contains an illustration titled “A Peaceful Yoyleian Supper”. This image depicts “an upper-class Yoyleian family enjoying their dinner”, presumably illustrated or taken during a time when Yoyle City was still inhabited. It is unknown, in this case, whether the name ‘Yoyleian’ serves as a demonym for a resident of Yoyleland, regardless of the species, whether it describes the Ancient Yoyleans who founded and developed the city, or both.
Post-abandonment[]
Yoyle city is abandoned. From the outside, buildings such as the Yoyle Needy look relatively untouched, and the technology and look of the city appears to be from the modern era, meaning the city was probably abandoned in the last century, however, the rate of technological advancement in the BFDI universe is unknown. Additionally, in the insides of buildings such as the Science Museum, the walls are peeling off with flowers and vines. When Golf Ball has a flashback in the building, it appears quite clean, likely before, during, or shortly after the abandonment. Assuming Bozo is in fact a younger version of Golf Ball, this means that the city was abandoned while Golf Ball was still young. These hint that the city was abandoned recently. As for the abandonment of the city, 3 hints are present, all in IDFB. The intro of IDFB shows UFOs over the city, which could be the reason the city was abandoned or how the people escaped. While Golf Ball is in the science museum, Evil Leafy flashes for one frame. Also in the science museum, Golf Ball's flashback has Bozo hiding from an Unknown Shadow. In conclusion, these 3 occurrences most likely contributed to the abandonment or at least "cursed-ness" of the city. However, some beings and objects still seem to reside here, even though most of the city is not in use.
Statistics[]
These statistics were seen in 2 videos made by carykh.[1][2]
- Yoyle City had a population of 215,097 (currently 0). It is unknown why it became abandoned.
- Yoyle City is 8.3 km2 in area, but Yoyleland (Only including the square region that is rendered) altogether is 225km2.
- If Yoyle City was real, it would be the second densest city, after Manila, Philippines.
- Yoyle City has a total of 109,578 buildings, each with a place name. There are 14,400 unique place names, meaning there are duplicates.
- Yoyle City has a total of 3,304 equally sized square blocks, each 50 by 50 meters long. with a maximum of 25 buildings per block.
- Yoyle City has 7,984,576 windows in total.
- Yoyle Needy has an equivalent height of 210 meters, which is close to the real-world Washington Space Needle's 184 meters.
- The total area for the field of Yoyle Stadium is 100x50 meters, the whole stadium is 200x150 meters. The 5x5 meter seat rows are unrealistically big.
- Yoyle Mountain has a height of 5,580 meters (18,307 ft.). If it is a real mountain, it would be the 206th highest mountain in the world.
- Yoyleland (only including the square region shown in renders) has more wild trees than trees in the city with a total of 179,034,521. That completely dwarfs the total city trees, 281,164. Of those trees, 27% are Spiky, 13% are Green Ball, 28% are Yoyle bushes and 32% are Pink Ball.
Trivia[]
- The Yoyle City flag is meant to represent the landscape of Yoyleland, with the white Y shape standing for "Yoyle", the purple on the right representing the purple grass, the blue on the left representing the Yoyle River, and the yellow on top representing the yellow sky.[1]
- In the intro for IDFB, if you look closely in the reflection of Yoyle City in the water, you can see UFOs above Yoyle City, which could be how the people left the town, or the disaster that caused the town to be abandoned.
- Apparently, potatoes can't grow in Yoyle City because there is too little sunlight there.[3]
- This could possibly go for other crops too, but it is unknown if this is true.
- The Yoyle Needy is similar in size and shape to the Washington Space Needle, which it was perhaps inspired by.
- Yoyle City was made using the software Processing 1.5.1.[1]
- All of the building names in Yoyle City are randomized by picking a beginning name and an ending name, out of 120 names each. There are 14,400 combinations altogether.
- The Yoyle City code and files can be downloaded on GitHub here (the .pde file will not work on Processing 3 and above).
- 2546 lines of code were used to create Yoyle City, which was just slightly less than BFDIA 5b.
- Each frame during the Yoyle City scene took 58 seconds to render on average.
