FreeSmarters, behold. The long-lost Yoyle City!

Yoyle City (Yoylese: ᖙʏᖙ–] ▽ꕈᖗᖙ) is a semi-abandoned metropolis located in Yoyleland. The city is distinct for its purple grass, yellow haze, large number of skyscrapers, and status as the largest known settlement on Earth. The city first appears in "The Long-lost Yoyle City" and serves as the setting for multiple episodes of Battle for Dream Island Again.

Yoyle City has been abandoned for a long period of time, according to characters' remarks and the run down state of structures like the Science Museum. The cause of its abandonment remains unknown. The city’s inhabitants spoke a unique dialect known as Yoylese, which features a distinct writing system, though it is only visibly used inside the Science Museum. Buildings across the city are inscribed using the Latin alphabet.

Yoyle City is located in Yoyleland, situated below the base of Yoyle Mountain and near the Goiky Canal. The Yoyle River runs through the city, spanned by 8 bridges. The city is surrounded by forest on all sides, including the coastline.

The city extends outward from a central downtown area along the Yoyle River, with suburban regions located on the outskirts. The downtown area features many skyscrapers, including the Yoyle Needy. The suburbs contain the Yoyleball Stadium. Every building in the city is labeled as a business and is arranged in large square blocks, each containing up to 25 buildings. The city also includes parks, pools, trees, traffic lights, and telephone poles. The Yoyleland Flag is commonly seen throughout the city, particularly in the suburbs.

Mapping the city[]

Yoyle City's map can be created using Cary Huang's city generation program YoyleCityWords, written in Processing 1.5.1[1]. The city’s generation seed, 23,581, and a heightmap, which has not yet been found, provide additional data that could be used to fully map the city. As mentioned during the Texas Object Hangout 2022, the heightmap is likely stored on Cary's old laptop. Although the city cannot be loaded at present, about half of it is directly visible in "The Long-lost Yoyle City", and since all city blocks are equally sized squares, the area and shape of these sections can be determined.

Coverage[]

Yoyle City first appears in "The Long-lost Yoyle City", when FreeSmart drives their van through the city on their way to Yoyle Mountain. In "Well Rested", the contestants relocate to Yoyleland, mentioning the need for a Hand-powered Recovery Center as one of the reasons. This is due to Ruby gluing the Recovery Center to the ground, making it impractical to travel 2,763 miles back and forth just to use it. However, in "Meaty", the contestants return to the Plains.

By the time of "Welcome Back", the contestants have moved back to Yoyle City. FreeSmart has set up camp at the Yoyle Needy, where they maintain diaries. It is revealed that the camera lens cap was left on during the hiatus, explaining the break in the series. Following this, the Grotato Farm is introduced, where unique potatoes known as grotatoes, which grow with less sunlight, are cultivated for Fries. Later, Golf Ball and Tennis Ball visit the Science Museum. However, Golf Ball experiences a traumatic flashback and forces herself and Tennis Ball to leave.

The 8 bridges of Yoyle City

Yoyle City features eight bridges spanning the Yoyle River, linking its downtown district to other regions. Six bridges measure three city blocks in length, while the third and eighth bridges extend four blocks. The southernmost bridge is the longest, stretching an impressive eleven blocks across the widest section of the river.

Abandonment[]

Prior to Yoyle City's abandonment[]

YoyleianSupper

In "Spore Day", it is revealed that Book contains an illustration titled "A Peaceful Yoyleian Supper". This image depicts "an upper-class Yoyleian family enjoying their dinner", presumably illustrated or taken during a time when Yoyle City was still inhabited. It is unknown, in this case, whether the name Yoyleian serves as a demonym for a resident of Yoyleland, regardless of the species, whether it describes the ancient Yoyleans who founded and developed the city, or both.

Post-abandonment[]

At some point, Yoyle City became abandoned. From the outside, buildings like the Yoyle Needy seem untouched, and the technology still looks modern. However, the rate of technological advancement in the BFDI universe is unclear. Inside buildings like the Science Museum, the walls are peeling and covered with flowers and vines, suggesting a long period of neglect. When Golf Ball experiences a flashback in the museum, it appears clean, indicating the city may have been abandoned relatively recently, possibly while Golf Ball was still young, especially if Bozo is indeed a younger version of Golf Ball.

Three key hints point to the cause of the abandonment, all from IDFB. First, UFOs are seen hovering over the city in the intro, possibly linked to the city's desertion or the people's escape. Second, during Golf Ball’s flashback in the Science Museum, Evil Leafy flashes for a brief moment, which may signify a connection to the city's downfall. Third, in the same flashback, Golf Ball is seen hiding from an Unknown Shadow, hinting at a mysterious presence or danger. These events suggest that the city’s abandonment is tied to these strange occurrences. Despite this, some beings and objects still remain in the city, even though most of the area is no longer in use. This is most notable with the residents of the New & Improved Supershop.

Statistics[]

Based on data from two videos by carykh.[1][2] The canonicity of these videos is uncertain.

  • Yoyle City once had a population of 215,097 people, which would mean there were about 25,915 people per square kilometer. If true, this would make Yoyle City the second densest city in the world, only behind Manila, Philippines.
  • The city covers an area of 8.3 square kilometers, with the broader region of Yoyleland being 225 square kilometers in total.
  • Yoyle City has a total of 109,578 buildings, each with a place name. There are 14,400 unique place names, meaning there are duplicates. The city is divided into 3,304 equally sized square blocks, each measuring 50 by 50 meters. A maximum of 25 buildings can fit into each block.
  • The city has a total of 7,984,576 windows across all its buildings.
  • Yoyle Needy has an equivalent height of 210 meters, comparable to the real-world Washington Space Needle, which stands at 184 meters.
  • Yoyleball Stadium has a field size of 100x50 meters, with the entire stadium spanning 200x150 meters. The seat rows are unusually large, each measuring 5x5 meters.
  • Yoyle Mountain has a height of 5,580 meters (18,307.09 feet). If it were a real mountain, it would rank as the 206th-highest in the world.
  • Yoyleland, which is larger than the city itself, has significantly more wild trees than those within the city. There are a total of 179,034,521 wild trees in Yoyleland, compared to just 281,164 in the city. Among the trees in Yoyleland, 27% are Spiky, 13% are Green Ball, 28% are Yoylebushes, and 32% are Pink Ball.

Trivia[]

  • The Yoyle City flag symbolizes the landscape of Yoyleland. The white "Y" represents "Yoyle," the purple section on the right represents the purple grass, the blue on the left represents the Yoyle River, and the yellow on top represents the yellow sky.[1] Its design resembles the Tuva flag of Russia but features horizontal bands of yellow, blue, and purple.
  • It is possible that the city was once inhabited by humans. It is possible that the main reason why the city was abandoned is due to the human race on Earth was wiped out due to either natural or paranormal causes, or a nuclear war.
  • In the IDFB intro, Yoyle City's reflection in the water reveals UFOs hovering above. This suggests they may have played a role in the city's abandonment, either how the people left the town, or the disaster that caused the town to be abandoned.
  • Potatoes cannot grow in Yoyle City due to insufficient sunlight, leading to the creation of grotatoes.
    • Other crops may also struggle to grow, but this is unconfirmed.
  • The Yoyle City code and files are available for download on GitHub here, though the .pde file is incompatible with Processing 3 and later versions.
  • Yoyle City was programmed with 2,546 lines of code, which is slightly fewer than BFDIA 5b.
  • Rendering each frame of the Yoyle City scene took an average of 58 seconds.
