“ | You do not understand, blob boy. Yoylite is one of the rarest minerals in the universe, and scientists would pay trillions of dollars just to research it! | ” |
Yoylite, also spelled Yoyleite[1] or Yoylelite[citation needed] (pronounced /'jɔɪj,(ə),lait/ [YOY-uh-lite]) (Yoylese: ᖙʏᖙ–ꕈᖗ] or ᖙʏᖙ–]–ꕈᖗ]) is a mineral caught by Ruby that first appeared in "Intruder Alert". Its usage comes where upon its owner being killed, their spirit still remains active, and allows them to recover themselves.
When combined with the Noctiluca yoylean's time-altering regenerative properties in "Start the Shift", the Yoylite gained powerful reality warping and space-time manipulation abilities, allowing the user to travel to the future and back to the past.
Appearance[]
Yoylite is a yellow mineral that emits a faint glow, contained in a dark purple chunk of stone. Yoylite was likely created or found by the people who used to live in Yoyle City, although one piece of Yoylite was found in space as a "meteoroid".
In "Start the Shift", there were multiple pieces of Yoylite in a minecart in a place known as the "Yoylite Mines".
In "Seasonal Shift", after having all of its time traveling abilities drained by One, the Yoylite pieces faded into a dull gray color, symbolizing that they were rendered powerless.
Coverage[]
In "Intruder Alert", Ruby calls the Yoylite a shooting star, while Book corrects her by calling the Yoylite a meteoroid. It is said by Ice Cube to have a salty taste. It is said to be worth trillions of dollars to research by Tennis Ball, and he even wanted Firey and Gelatin to retrieve it from Ruby to research it.
In "Meaty", after Firey is eliminated, Ruby can be seen holding the Yoylite, and later on Tennis Ball tries to take it himself. In the end, the limousine he and Fries were driving knocks the Yoylite out of Ruby's hand, causing it to fall next to the ruins of the limosine after the contestants fell off the Eiffel Tower.
In "Catch These Hands", it is revealed that the Yoylite's has the ability to keep a deceased possessor's spirit alive, showcasing how Ruby was able to recover herself. Because Pencil was also near the Yoylite, her spirit soon recovers her physical body.
In “Taste the Sweetness”, Tennis Ball finds the Yoylite hiding under his torn-up corpse first seen in “Meaty”, then shows Golf Ball about it and starts inspecting it.
In "Insectophobe's Nightmare 4", Golf Ball makes a straw out of Yoylite so Tennis Ball can extract the Anti-Poison from the Queen Bug.
In "PointyPointyPointy ♫", Golf Ball uses the straw to translate Bug-ese to English, and later on Tennis Ball suggests Nickel to use it to suck out pollution from the air the oil rig produces.
In "Start the Shift", Tennis Ball combines the energy of both the Yoylite and Fries' algae from the previous episode to remove the cake from his fuzz, when Nickel, grabbing his lost chunk, makes both of them accidentally time travel to "Getting Teardrop to Talk", "You Know Those Buttons Don't Do Anything, Right?", and "Category One", chasing after his chunk in the process. Eventually, the Yoylite was disposed of, then rediscovered by the Tennis Ball of present day, in which he and Golf Ball handled the Yoylite with proper care and enclosing it in a glass case.
In "Airplanes in the Night Sky", it appears briefly in a flashback showing when Fries died with Yoylite in his head in the previous episode.
In "Seasonal Shift", some of the TPOT debut candidates get ahold of the Yoylite in the Yoylite Lab and transport themselves to past episodes of the series. The Yoylite sample is then fractured into four pieces by Ten as a way for the contestants to catch the debutants, however near the end the Yoylite pieces were drained of all of their time traveling powers by One, rendering them completely useless.
Abilities[]
- Spirit recovery: If one dies in the presence of Yoylite, their spirit stays "partially alive" and can recover themselves on their own. This is shown in "Catch These Hands" and "Airplanes in the Night Sky". It appears that if one dies near multiple pieces of Yoylite, like Fries did in "Start the Shift", the effect allows them to recover themselves multiple times, even if subsequent deaths are nowhere near a Yoylite sample.
- Poison extraction: When used as a straw, Yoylite can be used to extract poison from objects or the air. This was used to extract poison from the queen bug in "Insectophobe's Nightmare 4" and to extract pollution from the air in "PointyPointyPointy ♫".
- Translation: When used as a straw, it can translate Bugese into English. It is unknown if it can translate other languages. This ability is shown in "PointyPointyPointy ♫".
- Time travel: This ability only works when the Yoylite is injected with Noctiluca yoylean. It can be used to time travel to the past or future. Time traveling to the past can have adverse effects on the present, almost destroying the world in one instance. Yoylite was used to travel to the future in "Start the Shift" and used to travel to the past in "Seasonal Shift".
- Eradication of people across time: When combined with One's own abilities, the Yoylite's power allows her to not only make someone disappear without a trace, but also erase them from every moment of the past, altering the timeline so that they never existed in the first place, which makes it impossible for anyone else to bring them back. All that remains as evidence of the victim's existence are the memories of the original timeline, which One decided to allow everyone to keep using the Yoylite's power.
Trivia[]
- The mineral's name and design is very similar to yooperlite, a type of rock that glows a bright orange when viewed under a UV light. This was acknowledged by jacknjellify in a Twitter post.[2]
- A recommended character named "Yoyle Lite" appears in the episode "PointyPointyPointy ♫" as one of the chatterboxes on Teardrop's island, this one notably being a sentient version of the mineral, with limbs and a face.
